Drone-related technologies are becoming a cornerstone of modern defence, enabling greater situational awareness, operational flexibility and resilience in increasingly complex and contested environments.
SWARMER – Swarming Autonomy in Non-permissive Environments is a four-year European Defence Fund (EDF) technological challenge focused on advancing autonomous drone swarms capable of operating in GNSS-denied environments, coordinated by IKNOWHOW SA.
SWARMER develops innovative solutions for independent navigation and coordinated swarm behaviour, integrating multiple onboard sensors through advanced intelligent fusion techniques. By enabling drones to perceive, adapt and cooperate without reliance on external positioning systems, the project addresses key operational challenges in dynamic and contested scenarios.
Funded under the EDF topic “Multi-sensor integration for robust autonomous drone navigation – Participation in a technological challenge”, SWARMER brings together nine partners from seven European countries, alongside an organiser and three additional participating teams. The project contributes to the EU’s Defence Capability Development Priorities, particularly in Ground Combat, Military Mobility, Infrastructure Protection and Airborne Command.
